“WHEN I WAS IN THE MILITARY THEY GAVE ME A MEDAL FOR KILLING TWO MEN AND A DISCHARGE FOR LOVING ONE.”

-U.S. Air Force Technical Sgt Leonard Matlovich

Imagine being drafted or volunteering to serve a country that will sacrifice your life without honoring what that entails. From the DoD Directive in December of 1993 until September of 2011, the U.S. military experienced official policy targeting non-heterosexual service members with the expectation that if they remained “in the closet” and no one knew, only then could they join or continue service. It’s estimated that 114,000 members were affected since WW2 with 14,000 receiving dishonorable classifications under DADT—a charge that carries significant ramifications in the transition to civilian life. Over a decade later, the DoD is finally committed to proactively reviewing the records of those who faced dishonorable discharges only because who they chose to love.
